Meet Nick Raccuia of KetoBrownie in East Boston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nick Raccuia.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
A few years ago, I started researching ketogenic diets to help achieve my fitness goal of attaining a single digit body-fat percentage. When I started the diet, which has now become a lifestyle, I found the other benefits of Keto much more appealing! I immediately noticed improvements in my mental clarity, an increase in energy levels and a positive impact on my overall mood. After experiencing these changes, I understood just how beneficial a ketogenic diet could be and the reason it’s gaining immense popularity in the modern health industry.

As much as I love Keto foods such as steak, bacon, and eggs, what I found most difficult about adhering to Keto was the need to satisfy the chocolate craving that would occasionally pop up. I tried dozens of Keto snacks on the market and never found one that hit the spot. The ones that did taste good, didn’t have the proper ketogenic macro-nutrients or were filled with a ton of ingredients you couldn’t pronounce.

It was then I decided I was going to make a better tasting Keto snack. I went to the local grocery store, bought a carriage full of keto-friendly ingredients and started baking several recipes daily for weeks on end in my apartment. Admittedly, the first few batches were terrible, a big shout out to all my friends for being my taste test guinea pigs!

After more ingredient testing, research and baking, I finally found a chocolate brownie recipe that I (and all the guinea pigs!) really liked. I started sharing it with others, got additional feedback and kept tweaking the recipe. After a few more iterations, I started working with a manufacturer to help me bake them on a much larger scale. Two years and thousands of customers later, I’m excited that my keto-friendly snack has allowed many to adhere to their ketogenic lifestyles!

Has it been a smooth road?
Starting a business was and continues to be the most challenging and stressful thing I’ve ever done in my life! I knew business would be hard but not THIS hard. I’ve faced a ton of struggles and obstacles over the last few years, especially as a small business with limited cash.

Some major business struggles include but are not limited to, changing my brand, damaged inventory during transit, new competitors, being back-ordered for months and educating consumers on the benefits of a ketogenic lifestyle.

I’ve learned that you’ll never be able to foresee exactly what will happen in business and you can only do so much planning to combat foreseeable issues. I’ve accepted that there’s going to be hurdles and obstacles no matter what and the best thing you can do is figure out a way over, under or around them.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with KetoBrownie – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love the culture and history that Boston offers. Sometimes, I take it for granted but am quickly reminded whenever I head downtown and see tons of tourists exploring and taking photos of the city.

I’m probably not the only one, but winter is what I like least about the city! Although it can get rather entertaining each winter seeing what your neighbor will use as their car-spot saver.
